4 Tips For Getting Relief When Your Braces Hurt

Even though you might like the idea that your teeth are being straightened, you might find yourself dealing with a bit of discomfort from your braces every now and then, such as right after you have them tightened. If you are currently suffering from braces-related pain, consider these tips for getting some relief.

1. Let Your Orthodontist Know

If you have just had your braces tightened, it is not uncommon to suffer from a bit of discomfort. If you haven't had them tightened recently but if you are still dealing with pain from your braces, however, you should not suffer alone. Instead, you should let your orthodontist know about your pain at your next appointment. He or she might be able to make adjustments to your braces to make them more comfortable for you and can check for any potential problems that might be causing you pain.

2. Use Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

There are a couple of types of over-the-counter pain medications that you can take to help relieve your pain. First of all, you may want to take Tylenol or another similar pain reliever to help with some of your discomfort. You can also purchase an oral pain reliever, which you can apply directly to any uncomfortable spots. Medication like Orajel can help numb the inside of your mouth and make it more comfortable. Just make sure that you follow the dosage and usage instructions for any over-the-counter medication that you might take.

3. Sip on a Cool Beverage

One easy way to get a bit of relief is to sip on a cool beverage, such as cold water. Keeping a water bottle or large cup of ice water close by while you are dealing with this discomfort can help provide the relief that you need, and as an added bonus, it can help you ensure that you stay properly hydrated, too. If you aren't a fan of water, another favorite cool beverage can help, too; just make sure that you brush your teeth and rinse your mouth out thoroughly afterward to prevent it from affecting your teeth.

4. Use an Ice Pack

Holding an ice pack against the affected area, on the outside of your mouth, can help with any swelling or inflammation that you might be dealing with and can provide a numbing sensation to help get rid of any braces-related pain.

It's true that having braces can sometimes be uncomfortable. However, following these tips can help you get rid of some of the discomfort.
